My words from Bob's service

Bob and I have been friends for around 60 years and, as you can imagine, there are many stories that I could tell. However, as I don’t want to be arrested at the age of 67, I think I should skip over many of them! I thought I would give some examples of the fun times we had when we were kids, way back in the days when we had to make our own amusement. Bob and I would go scrumping apples from the orchard down by Cippenham Village Green. We were often chased by the farmer, but fortunately, were never caught. That was when we learnt to run faster! I remember us collecting bits of old bikes. We’d strip the parts down and rebuild them into complete bikes. We would take these bikes up to Burnham Beeches Forest. There we would make our own cycle track circuits, spending hours and hours racing around, many times crashing and falling off. I also remember, during one of the Summer Holidays, we had packed lunches and Thermos Flasks and cycled all the way to Whipsnade Zoo and back. Quite a day out, as the round trip was over 80 miles! Also, again during the Summer Holidays, we used to go down to the river Thames to swim near a bend in the river. One time, when we were half-way across, a pleasure steamer came around that bend. That was when we learnt to swim faster! Many years later, we discovered girls! I remember, on numerous occasions, late at night, I would be walking along the road from my girlfriend’s house, and there would be a flash of headlights in the distance. It would be Bob in his Hillman Imp, having earlier left Maureen’s house. Off we would go to the bowling alley near Heathrow Airport and sit drinking coffee and just chatting until the early hours. Finally, I would just like to say that with Bob, it felt more like having a brother than a friend. Thanks for the memories, Bob.
